Are you recently engaged and struggling to put together the perfect Engagement Session outfits for you and your boo? Well, you’ve come to the right place! As a professional photographer throughout North Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee, I’ve spent years photographing proposals and engagements. Today, I’m revealing all my expert tips and style inspiration so you can show up looking and feeling your best on the day of your Engagement Session!

Coordinated Colors
Coordinating your outfit color palette will keep your engagement photos cohesive and timeless. Don’t worry—this doesn’t mean you have to show up in a matching all-white outfit (in fact, please don’t 🤣). Consider wearing shades that pair well together for a neutral aesthetic, like creams and browns.
To incorporate a pop of color, stick to complementary hues, like pastels or gem tones. You can also pick a specific color you love and style your outfits with various light and dark shades from the same family, so everything ties together.
Also, consider the season and location—coordinating with the backdrop of your location is always a plus! For woodsy locations, I love creams, pinks, and blues to contrast with all the green (peep Patti and Matt’s Engagement Session to see what I mean). For beachy vibes, I love shades of beige and blue, with maybe some pops of peachy pink to complement a sunset session!
And finally, for a downtown vibe, I love mixing in some texture and pops of color—but only if it feels like you. Neutral and monochromatic ‘fits are always a timeless, classic choice, so you can’t go wrong with that either!
Romantic Silhouettes
The cut and shape of your clothing can significantly impact the overall vibe of your Engagement Session. Consider what aesthetic you want to curate in advance, and choose outfits to help bring your vision to life.
For instance, I love it when the ladies show up in long, flowy dresses or skirts because I know they add a sense of liveliness. Many of my go-to engagement photo poses involve some movement, whether twirling, walking, or running, so try to stick to pieces that look good in both staged and candid shots.
Comfortable Pieces
One of my biggest Engagement Session style tips is to be comfortable in whatever you wear! Nothing is worse than forcing yourself into an outfit that feels inauthentic and stuffy just because you think it will photograph well.
Feeling uncomfortable in your clothing choices can affect your mood and prevent you from having fun and enjoying your session, which nobody (especially me!) wants. Be sure to try on whatever outfit you have in mind beforehand to ensure it looks and feels how you like, so you aren’t caught off guard on session day.
Subtle Textures + Patterns
Wearing pieces with subtle textures and patterns is an excellent, low-effort way to liven up your engagement photos. I usually don’t recommend super bold or flashy pieces for Engagement Sessions because they can overpower photos and take the focus away from the couple themselves. However, some tasteful florals, plaids, and sparkles can instantly elevate your look without distracting from the purpose of your session—taking lovey-dovey photos to share your engagement with the world!
Confidence is Key
Your Engagement Session is all about you, your fiancé, and the love you two share. While your outfit does matter, how you feel is a thousand times more important. My advice at the end of the day is to wear whatever makes you the best and most beautiful version of yourself.
Clothing should reflect who you are and what makes you unique, so wear your clothes—don’t let them wear you. When you show up to your Engagement Session rocking a cute outfit, it sets a positive tone for the entire experience. This is your time to shine, so make the most of it and HAVE FUN!
I hope my style tips help you plan the perfect Engagement Session outfits! Don’t forget to give me a shout if you’re looking for an engagement photographer.

Jessi
