What to Wear to a Family Photoshoot
The first step to a cohesive look is choosing a coordinated color palette. Rather than dressing everyone in identical shades, mix complementary hues that work well together. It also helps to tie your colors into the season—think browns, tans, and creams for fall, or pastel blues, pinks, and greens in the spring. Location also matters, so think about what your background might be, and try to coordinate with that as well!
In general, I recommend avoiding neon tones since they tend to be distracting in photos. And while I’m not always a fan of everyone wearing jeans, certain denim washes can work well when styled thoughtfully. Old Navy and Gap are great places to find affordable, coordinated looks for all ages.
To add more visual interest, incorporate subtle patterns and textures. Fabrics like velvet, cotton, silk, and lace create variety without overpowering the image. Free People is one of my go-tos for boho-inspired pieces with unique detail.
Keep in mind that less is more—large logos and bold, clashing patterns can steal focus. Instead, choose a few patterns that complement each other or designate who wears them. For example, kids in patterns, while the parents wear solids, or vice versa. Anthropologie is an excellent option for clothes with stylish, photo-friendly prints.
Accessories are the finishing touch every family photo outfit needs. Scarves, belts, jackets, hats, and jewelry are great for showing personality, and fun props—like flowers, books, or your child’s favorite stuffy—can add a charming flair. Just be careful not to overdo it so your images stay timeless.
Comfort is key, too. Family Sessions are always more fun (and more natural!) when you can move freely. I love when clients run, twirl, jump, and play—so choose outfits that allow for that. Flowy dresses and skirts photograph beautifully, adding movement and life. Joyfolie has adorable options, including “mommy and me” pieces, if you’re looking to treat yourself. Just be mindful of short hemlines or low-cut tops if you’ll be chasing little ones.
And last but definitely not least: wear something that makes you feel confident. Confidence photographs better than any trend, so choose pieces that make you feel like yourself. When you feel good, it shows! At the end of the day, a Family Session is about having fun and connecting with your people—not stressing over the perfect outfit.
