All photographers, regardless of experience level, can benefit from these five easy photography tips for taking better photos! I’ve been a professional photographer running my own small business for years, but I’m always looking for ways to learn and grow. Through plenty of trial, error, and lots of hands-on experience, I’ve discovered five key ways to improve your photography skills—no studio or professional models required. Whether you’re a mom, dad, or client about to have photos taken, or a photographer looking to level up, these tips will help you see results during your next session.
5 Easy Photography Tips for Taking Better Photos
One of my favorite ways to capture stunning, natural shots is by encouraging my clients to interact and talk with each other rather than focusing on the camera. It’s completely normal to be hyperaware of the lens, especially if you’re uncomfortable with or not used to getting your picture taken. However, some of my best photos come from documenting genuine moments where I can step back and almost act like a fly on the wall. Talking and bonding with friends and family during your session can also help you relax and reduce the pressure of being in front of the camera.

Similarly, I always strive to help my clients stay present and connected instead of worrying about getting the perfect shot. It’s easy to tell when someone looks stiff or overly posed in photos, which is something I try to avoid as much as possible. When you encourage clients to relax, have fun, and enjoy the moment, the result is far more authentic and dynamic photos.

On a practical note, try to wear outfits that allow unrestricted movement if you’ll be getting your picture taken. I’m a big believer in incorporating motion into photography (more on that in a bit!), so my clients often end up walking, running, twirling, and frolicking during our sessions. Choosing clothes that you feel confident and comfortable in can make a huge difference in how your photos turn out.

Trusting your photographer might sound like a no-brainer, but it’s a reminder many people still need! Ideally, you chose them because you love their photography style and trust their creative vision. Worrying about why your photographer is making certain artistic choices or trying to micromanage how they work can make it harder for them to do their job well. Leave it in the hands of the professional and have faith in the process so you can actually relax and enjoy your session.

The final beginner photography tip I want to share is to have your clients move more than they pose. Don’t get me wrong—posing prompts are incredibly helpful, and I incorporate them into every one of my sessions. But rushing clients through a long list of poses without giving them space to move naturally can mean missing out on some beautiful, spontaneous moments. I try to balance structure and freedom during my sessions by offering guided poses while leaving plenty of time to play around and get creative.
