Spring is the perfect time of year to get updated family or couple portraits, but it can be hard to coordinate a whole family’s worth of outfits that look cohesive and stylish. Don’t worry, though—I’ve got your back! Today, I’m sharing some spring outfit inspiration to keep the whole fam looking fashionable.

My first spring photo outfit tip is to pick a palette of complementary colors for everyone to coordinate their outfits. I’m sure we’ve all seen those family photos where everyone is dressed in the exact same color, and while that definitely has a time and place, I like to mix things up a little bit in my Family Sessions.
Choosing a palette with a few color and shade options will ensure no one clashes in your family photos. This also gives family members some freedom to choose outfits that will best flatter their skin tone and hair color.
In the family photos above, you’ll notice that everyone is wearing different shades of pink, blue, and cream tones. This is definitely one of my favorite color palettes when it comes to family portraits where you’ll be photographing both gals and guys.
My next spring outfit tip is to incorporate a few subtle patterns, like the floral and plaid seen above. There’s certainly nothing wrong with having everyone wear solid colors, but patterns can add some nice variety to your family photos.
Having specific family members, like kiddos, wear patterns is also a great way to keep them from getting lost in the big family crowd.
Make sure when you’re picking a pattern that it’s not super bold or overwhelming, and remember it should still fit with your chosen color palette.
Another way to add some subtle variety to your spring photo outfits is by mixing different textures. Materials like denim, corduroy, silk, and more photograph really well and add some dimension that helps prevent photos from looking flat and boring.
This is also a good option for sessions with kids who might get uncomfortable in certain pieces of clothing. Instead of forcing everyone into the same clothing texture, don’t be afraid to mix it up!
My next spring photo outfit tip is to style specific family members in similar shades so they look like a cohesive family unit. This is great for big Family Sessions where you might be photographing multiple generations or different sets of parents and kids.
You can incorporate this tip in a variety of ways, like having parents stick to one color and kids to another, keeping all the couples in complementary shades, or styling the women and men in different colors.
My last and most important spring photo outfit tip is to make sure that whatever you wear makes you feel confident! Being in front of the camera can be a little intimidating and uncomfortable, so I always want my clients to come dressed in something that gets them excited to have their picture taken. Confidence really is the best accessory and makes such a difference in photos.
